How to dry oranges

As I said above there are a few ways to dry oranges. You can dry oranges in the oven, dry oranges in the microwave, air dry oranges ( which takes forever in a day) or you can use a dehydrator to dry orange slices. The presto dehydrator I use works great. It leaves the oranges dried and with great color. This is by far the best way I have found to dry oranges.

Slicing oranges for drying

Slice oranges approximately 1/4 of an inch thick. I start by cutting off each end of the orange. Carefully slice the oranges evenly spaced. You will get about 7-8 slices per orange.

Line the bottom of a cookie sheet with paper towel. Place the oranges flat on the paper towel. When the cookie sheet is full, add another layer of paper towel. You can keep adding layers alternating between oranges and paper towels. When you are finished adding oranges, lay another piece of paper towel on top and gently press down. This is going to soak up some of the orange juice and make the drying process quicker.

Sliced oranges in a presto dehydrator.

Lay your oranges slices in a single layer on the presto dehydrator tray. When the tray is full, simply add another tray and fill. Once the trays are full, place the lid of the dehydrator on and plug in the unit. Check your oranges every couple of hours. The process will take about 6 hours.

When the oranges are completley dried to the touch. Unplug the dehydrator and let the oranges cool to room temperature. The oranges should not feel sticky. Store dried oranges in a paper bag or sealed container.

how long do dried oranges last?

Dried oranges last for about 1 year. After a year they start to loose color.
